I confess I had wondered why Holmes allowed me to accompany him on his investigations. From what Lestrade and Gregson had told me, he preferred to work alone. But after the harrowing events at Stoke Moran, I understood. He needed someone on whom he could rely in dangerous situations. I could serve as sword for him as well as pen.

Thank you! This seems like the first story where Watson has really had some action. I was struck by Holmes telling him he had qualms about bringing him along because of the danger.

I like how you deconstruct that old "the pen is mightier than the sword" in this one. They certainly work mightiest if combined, and if we weren't talking Philantropist Of The Century John Jamish Watson here, that'd be frightening.

Thank you! I'm not sure Holmes completely sees the value of his pen, although it must have brought him a good number of cases. But his bravery and loyalty is never in doubt. :-)
