Canon Story: The Speckled Band
Title: The Dangers Of Metaphor
Rating: PG

“Watson, may I extract a promise from you?”

“What is it, Holmes?”

“Promise me that any last words you may utter in an attempt to throw light on the method of your death will avoid any metaphor, simile or romantic language.”

“Don't worry, Holmes. If it comes to it, I shall call a snake a snake.”

A/N: Holmes/Watson. Yes, okay, I gave in to the schmoopy side on this one.

“I have a pistol!” cried a voice from above, and Watson's immediate reaction was to take one firm step in front of me, protecting my body with his own. It was then that I first felt my heart surge with such strong feeling for him that I knew I could never allow him to be hurt for my sake.

And there are screencaps of my favourite Granada moments at my LJ: here.

one firm step

There's a lot in that small phrase -- strength, bravery, fortitude, decisiveness. Excellent work pulling as much meaning you can out of every word.

Also, I love the instant reciprocity here. Watson moves to protect Holmes, and instantly Holmes feels completely protective of Watson himself.

Again, I'm loving you for making me laugh out loud with your first offering and breaking my heart a little with your second. Both are brilliant.

Thank you!

Wonderful:-)

"The Adventure of the Snake"; not so mysterious a title...

Enjoyed both of these! Especially agree with Holmes on not wanting his friend to use cryptic metaphors to create a mysterious murderer with his final dying words. But, of course, without such a bizarre metaphor as the speckled band, where would the mystery have been? Stepfather, snake bite...would not have produced such a spectacular mystery for Holmes and Watson to solve together and bond over!

The first one made me grin - I'm sure if Sherlock was murdered, he'd be sure to leave exact details of the manner of his death, plus a description of the murderer, scratched somewhere convenient. :)
