Despite the success of his deductions and the inspector's admiration, Holmes was in as bleak a mood as I had ever witnessed. I suspect the death of Cubitt and the uncertain fate of the lady weighed more heavily than he would admit, even to me.

To Baker Street, then. To sanctuary.
