I had a great deal of time to myself in Lyons. One thought kept turning in my head. Had I not abandoned Holmes for the comforts of marriage, I would have been with him. I would not have let him neglect his health so. It was my fault Holmes was ill. And it was my responsibility to set it right.

Och, Watson. In some sense he's wrong, in some he's right, aye? Still, regrets for the past will never do, and I think canon!Watson does so much to help.

If the European case was as intense as he said, he probably really wouldn't have been able to do anything to make Holmes take better care of himself - look how unsuccessful he was at Hayter's! But I do think he would take Holmes' situation to heart, and feel that he ought to have done something (which he did, by answering the mysterious summons...)

Thank you! I just can't help but think that he'd feel some responsibility for not being there for Holmes when he clearly needed someone to look after him (not that Holmes would listen!).

Thanks! 60 words doesn't usually take me too long, as long as I've read the story and have an idea of where to go. :-) But I agree, there's a load of depth and complexity in Watson's relationship with Sherlock...
