Woefully behind and catching up:

Canon: The Second Stain

Lady Trelawney Hope disagreed with Doctor Watson's accounting. The stain on the carpet was, in fact, the second stain. The first was on her character failing to trust her dear husband with the details of her youthful indiscretions. The final stain was found not on the floor, but rather on the good doctor for revealing the first in his memoirs.

Sitting hunched over his desk trying to cram the seven letters of the word quarter into a space meant for four, Cunningham should have began suspecting that his young son Alec had difficulty in planning ahead. However, it was not until until he heard people rush in to save the detective that he truly understood the cost of Alec's impulsiveness.

Thoughtful contributions. A nice chance to harken back to a few canon stories some weeks ago!
I particularly like the analogies with the stains in the first.

An almost humorous take in the second - except for the evil consequences :-)

I'm particularly intrigued by the more abstract concept of the stain, and how the thread weaves itself through the whole narrative, narrating level included. Concluding the outcome of the second case from the strange note is just as genius. Great job!

I like the idea of Lady Trelawney Hope's indignation at Watson's disclosure. I presume he had the discretion to wait till it was not damaging, and she did not exactly behave appropriately anyway:-)

Yes, his son's impulsive action really did lead to their downfall. You have made me feel slightly (but only slightly) sorry for the father.

I enjoyed both of these, thank you.

Both of these are terrific. I was always struck by the fact that Watson seemed to be giving away this woman's secrets to the world in SECO, and I'm so glad you picked up on that for this piece.

And I adore the idea of deducing someone's impulsiveness from their crushed writing. That's quite nifty.

Great work!
