Warnings:  Some spoilers for The Adventure of the Cardboard Box, so if you haven't read that, you might not want to read this.  Also, the subtitle "Willpower" is a play on words. Sorry about that.

Author's Notes:  60 words of my own inspired by one of the canon stories.

CARD -- The Adventure of the Cardboard Box

One sister lost to jealousy, another to brain-fever and guilt. I might’ve been the third sister lost, for grief-stricken horror nearly killed me. But the detective’s doctor friend tended me, and even tried to refuse payment, though his clothes said he didn’t have a copper to spare.

He will eventually. I’ve no family left, and a renewed appreciation for kindness.

Warnings: memories of war
Author's Notes: Two again this week. I seem to end up with two for weeks I find challenging. I start writing one, am not enormously enthused about it, start another, am not enraptured by that one either. So then I end up with two, neither of which is completely satisfying for me. But there are some decent qualities to both, so here they are.

I can see it in his eyes; he is thinking of the war. In his mind, he is there, hands caked in blood and sand, struggling mightily against desperate odds to save as many shattered lives as he can.

Watson never speaks of it. With me, he doesn't need to. Perhaps that helps explain why he remains by my side.

"What is the meaning of it, Watson? What object is served by this circle of misery and violence and fear?”

I wanted to tell him. I wanted to explain that it’s love that drives men mad. Love that makes men miserable and joyous. Love that inspires violence, fear, passion, devotion. The furnace of souls burns hot for all but himself.

A/N: Yet another week where I wish I had more words. One day I'll get used to being brief.

The truth is that I am always striving to be in rapport with Watson. My apparent preoccupation with Lestrade's letter was merely to cover that all my attention was on how Watson's finances hung heavily on his mind, leaving him open to other dark thoughts. He needed the distraction of a case, and I could happily provide him with that.

Title: Waiting

I had been waiting for someone like him for so long – perhaps all my life. To be treasured, though he use me hard – even abuse me. To be made a prize of, boasted of as worth more than the value others had given me: well worth lying unstrung on a dusty shelf at old man Rubenstein’s for all those months.
