A Travellling Man

During the lonely years I traveled the world as the explorer Sigerson and other personae, I played a deadly game of hide and seek with Colonel Moran's assassins and led a second life as a secret agent for my brother. I had adventures enough for a lifetime.

I'd have traded them all for a glimpse of home and my Watson.

Character(s): Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft Holmes, Dr. John Watson
Summary: Holmes pays another visit to a particular set of rooms.
Warnings: Some very minor spoilers for EMPT, so if you haven't read that, you might not want to read this. In addition, this ties in fairly directly with last week's 60, so if you haven't read that one yet, you might want to do so before reading this.
Word Count: 60, plus an extended-play version (100 words).
Author's Notes: 60 words of my own inspired by one of the canon stories.
Disclaimer: I don't own them.

EMPT – Second Visit
His rooms were as secure as ever, but I did not remove my disguise.

“The Foreign Office is understandably dismayed, but I am glad to see you back. London needs you more than ever.”

For us, that was an effusive welcome. I smiled to hear it, but remained focused. “How is he?”

“Unhappy, but I expect that will change shortly.”

Extended-play version:
His rooms were as secure as ever, but I did not remove my disguise. It was neither prudent nor necessary. We studied each other. Mycroft’s hair was greyer, and there were new lines on his massive face.

“The Foreign Office is sorry to lose their best field agent, but I am glad to see you back. London needs you more than ever.”

For us, that was as effusive a welcome as glad cries and embraces. I smiled to hear it, but remained focused. “How is he?”

“Unhappy. But I expect you will address that problem along with your other concerns.”

As he paled and fell back into the chair behind him my heart stuttered to a halt. Could I possibly have killed him? After three years of fighting just to see my dear Watson again could I lose him so instantaneously? No, I shook sense into myself. Watson was far too sturdy to die so. I went to fetch brandy.

Author's Notes: Since I’m trying to catch up, I’m reading some of the stories I missed at the same time as reading the current stories. The last two weeks have shown peculiar similarities between the stories I’d inadvertently paired together – in particular, The Valley of Fear and The Final Problem. (Hence why I’m saying this is very much based on both.)

I understand John Douglas’s Valley now, a hunted man racing across international borders for my life. I often thought Douglas sacrificed safety for five years of matrimony. Now I know better. I would not trade my years with Watson for a day of peace.

John Douglas died twice before he was free. Perhaps I will only need to die once.

Ocelot's Note: Breaking News

“’E’s back.”

“Who is?”

“Mr ‘Olmes.”

“Nah, ‘e’s dead.  Died three years ago.”

“Inspector Lestrade says ‘e’s back.”

“It’s true.  Met a cab horse, said ‘e took ‘im and the doctor to Cavendish Square.”

Another horse comes in.

“I’ve seen Mr ‘Olmes.  Everyone's really happy that e’s back, except for a geezer called Colonel Moran who seemed furious about it.”

Title: Her Last Letter || His Right Hand

Prompts used: "Empty" for "Her Last Letter"
Rating: G
Author's Notes: The first story deals with how Mary vanished from Watson's life. The second was inspired by this week's discussion post, in which my sore brain mixed up Moriarty's right hand, Mrs Hudson's part and Mycroft's involvement in Sherlock's disappearance scheme. I could be sorry, but I don't have enough RAM capacity left.

Her Last Letter

Switzerland would always bear the mark of loss for Doctor Watson. His best friend dead, and then, expecting a home, finding an empty house instead.
“Forget me. Have me declared dead. My life as it was is over.” Mary had written.
He reached for his hat, his eyes on the three-year-old letter. It was time to investigate Ronald Adair’s death.

His Right Hand

Solemnly the slender woman wiped a slight trace of dust off the puppet. Three years since her master had died. Three years since her Angel, the only centre of her faith, had killed him. Three years since Mr Holmes had gone into hiding, and since Jane Moriarty had employed her. Would it always continue like this? Mrs Hudson felt tired.

AN: Catching up on last week, too! Both from Lestrade's POV (I know he doesn't appear in FINA, but who cares?).

EMPT
I read the wire once, then again, not quite believing the words. Mr. Holmes . . . dead? It seemed impossible; the man had defeated some of the worst criminals in London, after all. But it truly sank in when I saw Dr. Watson for the first time afterwards. The pain in his eyes caused mine to sting with tears.

FINA
It was a relief to see with my own eyes that Mr. Holmes really was alive—a relief both professionally and personally. While Dr. Watson had continued with his practice, and helping the Yard on occasion over the past three years, it was plain to see that he was now back in his element. Such a sight gladdens my heart.
