SOLI – Particular Enjoyments
"What should I have done?"

While Watson exclaimed over my contusions, I felt glad it had been I, not him, who had thought to go to the public-house. Not that I doubted Watson would have emerged the victor. Woodley would not have prevailed against him, for my Watson is a formidable fighter at need. But he would not have enjoyed the fight, and I did.

Extended-play version (100 words):
"What should I have done?"

In truth, my Watson had not done so ill as I implied. I thought as much then, but much more so the next day. While Watson exclaimed over my contusions, I found myself glad it had been I, not him, who had thought to go to the public-house. Not that I doubted Watson would have emerged the victor. Woodley would not have prevailed against him, any more than he did me, for my Watson is a formidable fighter in his own right. But he is no pugilist, and he would not have enjoyed punching Woodley’s brutish face, as I did.

Title: Tease

Rating: G

If Soames had been less agitated he might have riled at Holmes’ disdainful comment, but I knew it was just a tease. While Holmes had been buried in his manuscripts I had spent the week bored to tears. This was the first interesting thing to occur and there was nothing Holmes could say that would possibly make me miss it.

Title: Selfish

I am a selfish man and not afraid to admit it, yet I found the comparison to Carruthers so blatant I could not help but offer my assistance with pity. After all, I too longed after someone I could not have. I knew the reassuring power of a simple presence. If that’s selfishness then I grasp it with both hands

Author's Notes: Women were not allowed officially until much later at Oxford and Cambrige (I chose Oxford randomly), though some did sit in seminars and took examinations. Jane will therefore have disguised as a young man, the way she did most of her life.

“A letter from Miss Moriarty?” Watson asked.
“Indeed. She seems to make good progress with her studies.”
The expression of amusement on Holmes’s face tickled the good doctor’s curiosity.
“How so?”
“Oh, it is sublime, and yet our good old Jane would never have been able to compare my efforts concerning Miss Violet to a black hole before Oxford. Fascinating.”

Ocelot's Note: We do try to get the views of the most intelligent animals, unfortunately this horse didn't seem to have a clue what was going on.

First of all they want me, because “it’s not safe to cycle”; then they get out in a hurry leaving me to canter off by myself; then someone else gets in and turns me back, before letting me eat some grass.  Finally the first one comes back and I’m off like lightening again.  I wish they’d make their minds up.
