First of all, I just want to say that I have no monopoly on discussion posts: anyone can post a discussion on any canon story whenever they like. I’m just getting the ball rolling, as it were. And to be honest, this isn’t a discussion post so much as me talking about the bits I enjoyed in The Abbey Grange. (In no way can I be considered an expert on Holmes.)

Discussion continues... )

Canon Story: The Adventure of the Abbey Grange

Author's Notes: "Watson, you are a British jury, and I never met a man who was more eminently fitted to represent one." I wondered what experience Holmes had of juries...

“Is that the verdict of you all?” asked the judge.

“It is,” said the foreman, looking away from Holmes.

“I see,” said the judge. “Mr Sherlock Holmes!”

Holmes stood.

“I fear I must agree,” said the judge. “As you refuse to stop disparaging the intelligence of your fellow members, I have no choice but to dismiss you from this jury!”

Canon Story: The Abbey Grange
Title: Stanley Hopkins

Inspector Hopkins may not have been an emotional man, but no-one could doubt his commitment to his work and Holmes respected him for this.  There were times I would catch him looking at Hopkins with an expression akin to one I have seen on Lestrade’s face when we two are alone, and I wonder whether there is more than respect.

And I couldn't have a story featuring Hopkins without Mouselet sticking her paw in:

Title: Hopkins Comes To Dinner (The Ocelot's Casebook)

Tonight my dear Inspector Hopkins agreed to stay for dinner and I was able to spy on him as he ate.  This time the case he had consulted Mr Holmes about had come to a satisfactory conclusion and there was such a sweet smile on his lips that he had me mesmerised.  If only he could always be so happy.
