“These are excellent,” said Pa, tucking into his pork chops.

”And they were cheap,” said his wife. “Been cut up incorrectly or something.”

“I’ll say they’ve been cut up incorrectly,” Pa laughed. He pushed his fork through the gaping holes in the meat.

Their youngest stared agog. “They look like they’ve been harpooned.”

“Harpooned!” smiled his mother. “What an imagination.”

He’s a queer ‘un, that Mr Holmes, wanting to stab that pig.  Cost him a pretty penny too; as I said to him I weren’t gonna get no decent joint orf it once he’d finished with it.  He paid up like a good ‘un, said it was worth it for what he’d learned.  Clever bloke, but does some strange things.

When we asked Mouselet to write about her first meeting with Inspector Hopkins her report was illegible, for she had drooled all over the paper.  Her second attempt was scarcely better, since it concentrated on his beautiful eyes and his lovely soft hair and “oh, his smile” leaving us none the wiser regarding the circumstances.  We shall try again soon.
