This week we’re having a look at The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle. It’s rather a suitable story for the first Sunday in Advent, as it’s set just after Christmas Day. And Holmes, of course, is celebrating with a puzzle.

As usual, I’ve typed up a few thoughts to get the discussion going.

Author's Notes: When I wrote this story a few months ago, I was convinced Watson’s brother was called Henry. Over the years a guess had turned into a “fact” in my head. (Or is Henry used in a book or film somewhere..?)

Mr Henry Baker and his habits naturally turned my mind to another Henry — my brother.

I remembered a past Christmas: my brother was six and I four. Father allowed Henry to hold his watch, and we both stared and listened in fascination.

Until — “Come on, John!” — we were away.

There was no need to measure time. We were immortal then.

It was Holmes’ custom to hang a blue bauble at the top of the tree instead of a star.  And every year, when the Irregulars came for their festive tea, the youngest one would ask why it was there.  So Holmes would regale them with the story that began with Mr Henry Baker’s hat and finished with a repentant thief.
