“The ego is a dangerous thing, Watson.” Holmes’ angular features glinted in the thin Norwegian sunlight. “Twisting the facts against an innocent man, just to avoid one’s theory being proved wrong.”
“Hopkins?” I said. “Yes, it surprised me, too. I’d always thought him a good man.”
Holmes sighed and wrapped his scarf tighter. “A good man, but a man nonetheless.”

I stretch and sigh, burrowing into his warmth. He never ceases his fussing, my Watson. “And you’d have had me eat a hearty meal first, I’m sure.”
“Not so.” His breath is hot in my ear. “I’m well aware of the value of exercise before breakfast.”
