She certainly no longer needed the money but Mrs. Hudson was sad to see her lodger leaving for Sussex.


They were both here today: Holmes juggling his belongings, Watson tripping over the detritus and falling flat on his face.

Mrs. Hudson winced.

She had nothing but affection for them—but it had been like living with Barnum and Bailey’s Circus.

Holmes needed to rest, so I instructed Mrs Hudson to deny all visitors.  I opened the window to allow some air to remove Holmes’ tobacco fumes, for he had been smoking incessantly.  I believed we would be safe from all disturbances, but had not bargained on a trained cormorant flying in the window.

Next time we shall go to Cornwall.

A/N: The ocelot first made its appearance at the first telling of The Veiled Lodger.  It seemed appropriate therefore to provide another story now and to dedicate it to scfrankles who is doing sterling work at keeping this comm going.

Why did Holmes have to send for Watson?  We were in the process of rehearsing our part in a case.  Dr Watson and I would saunter along the pavement in front of the smart hotel, distracting both the commissionaire and the bodyguard; whilst Mr Holmes was able to reach the hotel room unobserved and find the evidence that he needed.
