This week we’re having a look at A Scandal in Bohemia. As usual I’ve typed up a few thoughts to get the discussion started.

Author's Notes: “When a woman thinks that her house is on fire, her instinct is at once to rush to the thing which she values most. … In the case of the Darlington Substitution Scandal it was of use to me... A married woman grabs at her baby—an unmarried one reaches for her jewel box.” Mothers aren’t always married.

“He’s not my baby!” sobbed Mrs. Darlington.

Her husband glanced at Holmes. “She’s not well…” But a cry interrupted him.

“FIRE!”

And a maid rushed in and desperately snatched up the boy.

Holmes smiled sadly. “When danger threatens, a mother thinks only of her child. Mr. Darlington, I believe you will find your other son safe at the local convent.”

Warnings: None
Author's Notes: Lurker, first-time poster! I've been dazzled by the displays of wit and rhyme in the clerihews here for weeks and I was finally inspired to try my hand. Be gentle. It's my first time. :)

Irene Adler, The Woman
Broke the "fair sex" ban.
She got Holmes's attention
And his frequent mention.

Title: A Keen Desire
Author: [livejournal.com profile] vaysh
Rating: G
Words: 60
Author's Notes: Title is taking from this line: As I passed the well-remembered door, which must always be associated in my mind with my wooing ..., I was seized with a keen desire to see Holmes again.

Eight months into our marriage Mary told me Holmes was an invert and I the object of his private wooing. Yet Holmes often contemplated the late Irene Adler's photograph. I convinced myself he was longing for the gentler comforts of married life. But then he would look at me and play his melancholy tunes, and I knew Mary was right.

“You have not changed a bit.”

“You were never known as a flatterer.”

“I look at your picture every day.  I would still have known you anywhere.”

“And I you.  The silver in your hair makes you all the more distinguished.  But in truth, you would have recognised me had I been in disguise?”

“I am never caught out twice.”

I accidentally wrote this as a 100 word drabble to start with, so the above sentence immediately continues with:

I was sorry to learn the news about Norton.”

“Thank you.  You must miss Dr Watson.”

“This winter has been a long one.  You have coped by yourself again?”

“Indeed I have.  I, like you, Mr Holmes, am a survivor.”
