This week we’re having a look at The Priory School. As always, I’ve typed up a few thoughts to get the discussion started.

Author's Notes: His card, which seemed too small to carry the weight of his academic distinctions…

The witness was an Oxford don, who eyed Holmes’ card suspiciously.

“I wonder you do not list your academic qualifications,” he said.

“To be truthful,” Holmes smiled, “I did not complete my official studies.”

The professor frowned. “I spent eight years at various colleges.”

Holmes nodded gravely. “It is nothing to be ashamed of. Some people do need extra assistance.”

Author's Notes: …we stared in silent amazement at this ponderous piece of wreckage, which told of some sudden and fatal storm far out on the ocean of life. (I think a perfect subtitle would be: "Nervous Wreck".)

Dr. Thorneycroft Huxtable:
For him the ocean of life looks trouble.
Holmes and Watson weren’t expecting flotsam
But on their bearskin they’ve got some.

It should not have surprised me that Holmes had written a monograph on different bicycle tyres.  For now, many years later, he can instantly detect which motor car has passed by purely from the imprint of its tyres.  Holmes has long since abandoned his attempts to educate me in all the subtle differences, disappointed by my complete lack of interest.
