I thought back to my friend’s detachment as he examined the girl’s body. “No,” I agreed.

He had searched for the killer after the police declared it hopeless. Holmes sometimes wears a cold mask. But it is just a mask.

The second Professor Moriarty was wrong when he assumed Douglas had been lost at sea. Holmes and Douglas had concocted a plan, based on Holmes’ own adventures at the Reichenbach Falls, and it was not Douglas who went overboard. My heart went out to Barker, for we could not tell him the news, and I knew exactly how that felt.
