The second Professor Moriarty was wrong when he assumed Douglas had been lost at sea. Holmes and Douglas had concocted a plan, based on Holmes’ own adventures at the Reichenbach Falls, and it was not Douglas who went overboard. My heart went out to Barker, for we could not tell him the news, and I knew exactly how that felt.

Ah, yes - so Holmes gets the idea for saving Douglas from his own experiences, not the other way round. I like the detail that it wasn't Douglas who went overboard - it was the second Moriarty's assassin I suppose? And poor Barker - cast in the Watson role.
