Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then be inspired to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

This week my featured form is the diamante.

Title: A Quiet Christmas
Author: [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles

Mary considered her list of Christmas presents. “Gloves for Mrs. Forrester, cigars for Anstruther… What about Mr. Holmes?”

“Oh, I’m taking Holmes out one evening to hear a concert,” said Watson.

“So that’s everyone…” Mary frowned. “No, wait! There’s Mrs. Hudson! What will her present be?”

Watson raised an eyebrow. “I’m taking Holmes out one evening to hear a concert.”

This year’s experiment of selling poultry in Covent Garden market will not be repeated.  The tendency of the live fowl to eat the fruit and vegetables belonging to other traders resulted in a number of arguments leading on occasion to unacceptable brawls.  The magistrates have therefore ruled that next year all poultry will again only be sold in Smithfield Market.

I apologise for my tardiness with this.

Title: Another Set of Vices

Author's Notes: Title is from this canon quote from STUD: "'I keep a bull pup,' I said, 'and I object to row, because my nerves are shaken, and I get up at all sorts of ungodly hours, and I am extremely lazy. I have another set of vices when I'm well, but those are the pricipal ones at present.'"

The St. Clair case brought how to me first-hand the potential liberties that a disguise might afford a man. Holmes’ skill at them having been so instrumental in solving the mystery, I could not help but wonder what other places, apart from opium dens, he might gain access to – and whether he had yet another set of vices besides narcotics.

Title: For Want of a Nail

Author's Notes: An answer to one of the questions raised in the discussion this week, about what happened to the reward.

“So what do you intend to do with this reward? I daresay, a tidy sum.”
“Indeed, Watson, and we are far from the only parties deserving of it. It should go to our commissionaire, Jack Horner and his family, and poor Mr. Henry Baker.”
“Henry Baker?” I raised an eyebrow.
“Of course, Watson. For want of a nail, et cetera.”
