Author: gardnerhill

Warning: None.
Summary: Surely Watson must have thought “There but for the grace of God goes John Watson.”

***

“A letter from Corporal Wood.” Watson beamed. “His case has been approved and he’s now receiving a small pension – enough to stave off the knife-edge of poverty. That’s a weight off my mind.”

Holmes smiled. “Well done, Watson. Your appeal on his behalf to the Army board was successful.”

“Not all wounded soldiers are lucky enough to befriend consulting detectives.”

Author's Notes: ...the landlady seemed to be in considerable trepidation, for she had never seen an animal like it.

“It’s the most curious creature...” mused the landlady.

“Yes?” said her friend, wide-eyed.

The landlady nodded. “Sometimes it’s curled up, thinking about its prey. Sometimes it’s dashing around the room. And once I caught it climbing the curtain!”

“What is this creature?” the friend whispered.

“It has many names but I call it…”

The landlady’s voice dropped.

“...a consulting detective!”

The ladies of the Guild of St George would be very grateful for the donation of any cast-off clothing, which they can sort and pass on to the poor of our parish.  Donations may be left in the church hall next to St James Church at any time.  Those wishing to receive clothing may attend on Monday evenings at 8pm.

Warning: Hmmm, technically I guess this has a very minor spoiler for The Man With the Twisted Lip.
Summary: A minor domestic mystery solved.

Mary thought the ‘David’ puzzle extremely clever. “I’m almost tempted to drop some similar allusion into our conversations as a badge of mystery!”

“Oh, marvelous! But what name would serve?”

“It is the second letter of James that tells us ‘faith without works is dead.’ If ever you hesitate to take another case with Mr. Holmes, I shall remind you.”
