“Nervous lesions…” I rustled through my library. “Ah, here it is!” I came back with several other monographs as well. “I’ve written a few myself.”

Dr. Trevelyan beamed.

But Holmes was vexed. “Watson, Dr. Trevelyan brought us a mystery–”

Ignoring Holmes, I gave one to my fellow medico. “A little something I wrote about possible treatments for cocaine addiction.”

Canon Story: The Resident Patient
Rating: Gen
Summary: Scylla and Charybis aren't the only mythological beasts to threaten Watson. Here's a list. Feel free to add more in the comments.

1.       The Hydra [of the Rent]. Just when last month’s damage has been paid, the incident with the rug occurs.

2.       Medusa. Mrs. Hudson upon seeing what happened to the rug.

3.       The fire-breathing Chimera. Holmes when he’s has been smoking all day (and forgot his tooth powder).

4.       The Sphinx. Watson himself when anyone asks where he was injured.

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

Hatred and Vengeance, My Eternal Portion

by William Cowper

Note from Rachel: Mr. Blessington lived in fear that the men he had betrayed would track him down. This poem is about the suffering that a guilty man feels awaiting punishment. It makes a reference to "Abiram," which I had to look up to understand: Biblically, he was a conspirator against Moses. In the end, "He and all the conspirators, with their families and possessions, were swallowed up by the ground."

Thank you so much to Rachel. And here is my suggested form to revisit this week: the bref double. (The link takes you back to a previous poetry page.)

But you do not have to use that form. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

221B verselet, abecedarian poetry, acrostic poetry, alexandrine, ballad, beeswing, blackout poetry, blues stanza, bref double, Burns stanza, call and response, chastushka, cinquain, circular poetry, clerihew, colour poems, concrete poetry, Cornish verse, curtal sonnet, diamante, doggerel, double dactyl, ekphrasis, elegiac couplet, elegiac stanza, elfje, englyn, epigram, epitaph, epulaeryu, Etheree, fable, Fib, florette, found poetry, ghazal, haiku, In Memoriam stanza, Italian sonnet, jueju, kennings poem, lanturne, limerick, lyric poetry, mathnawī, micropoetry, mini-monoverse, palindrome poetry, pantoum, Parallelismus Membrorum, poem cycle, quintilla, renga, riddle, rime couée, Schüttelreim, sedoka, septet, sestina, sonnet, tanka, tercet, terza rima, tongue twister poetry, triangular triplet, triolet, Tyburn, villanelle

Please leave all your poems inspired by The Resident Patient in the comments on this post. I look forward to seeing them!

Warm regards,

Mrs. Hudson

Author's Notes: “Not drawn towards drink, eh?”

“Would you mind throwing these empty brandy bottles away?” Watson attempted a smile. “Mr. Holmes has influenza, you see.”

“Yes, of course...”

Mrs. Hudson paused.

“Does brandy cure influenza then, sir?”

“Haven’t the foggiest,” said Watson. “I’m the one who’s been drinking it.”

And he closed his eyes in silent prayer as a bedside bell began to tinkle yet again.

Today Holmes wagered he could fake a catatonic state which would take in anybody whom I chose to name.  I named Mrs Hudson, who took full advantage of the situation to dust our rooms.  Once satisfied with the state of the rooms, she used the feather duster on Holmes, who sneezed loudly, thus losing the bet.  Holmes was not happy.

Title: The Two Lesbias
Author: [livejournal.com profile] godsdaisiechain
Rating: PG
Summary/Notes: The Nora Creina was a popular tune about Lesbia as well as a ship.

“The Nora Creina?” Watson asked, folding a newspaper. “HUSH!!!” The Diogenes Club hissed as one.

“Of the two Lesbias,” Sherlock said as they gained the pavement. “Perhaps significant?” Watson scowled.

“Or not. You are rather more robust, my dear Watson, than any lesbian.”

Watson paused as Holmes adjusted his deerstalker with a pointed wink. They linked arms and headed home.
