Title: Monsters
Canon Story: The Resident Patient
Rating: Gen
Summary: Scylla and Charybis aren't the only mythological beasts to threaten Watson. Here's a list. Feel free to add more in the comments.

1.       The Hydra [of the Rent]. Just when last month’s damage has been paid, the incident with the rug occurs.

2.       Medusa. Mrs. Hudson upon seeing what happened to the rug.

3.       The fire-breathing Chimera. Holmes when he’s has been smoking all day (and forgot his tooth powder).

4.       The Sphinx. Watson himself when anyone asks where he was injured.

Great selection!

The Valkyries - Mrs Hudson on discovering not only the room full of smoke, but further damage to the repaired rug.

Cerberus - any dog on seeing Watson and Holmes approaching. Word has got round about what happens to canines in a Holmes story...

And I think my favourite in your list is Watson being the Sphinx ^_^

The Sphinx's riddle: What is it that walks on three legs out the door as fast as possible when the topic of the rug is brought up by the Medusa?

Thank you for this cryptological footnote to canon. Hydras are particularly ubiquitous, aren't they?
