Title: The Sign of Four, Ch. 5-8: Creosote
Author: gardnerhill
Word Count: 60
Rating: G
Warning: None.
Summary: A master detective is on the scent.

***

The humans wanted me to find the smell. So I hunted down the smell. A sharp, good smell, delightful when combined with all the other dock smells (salt, dead fish, unwashed humans, vomit, beer, canvas, seasoned wood).

My bosses were very pleased with my work – both made that human barking happy-noise when I proudly led them up to the barrel.

Title: Pondicherry Lodge
Canon Story: The Sign of Four

Rating: Gen
Content Notes: OCs (Inky Quill, porcupine, and Baxter, mole)
Summary: One creature's empty treasure-hole is another one's castle.
Author's Note: "It looks as though all the moles in England had been let loose in it."

“Mister Baxter, are you leaving us?”
“Oh, yes, Mister Quill, me, the missus, the whole family. Haven’t you heard?”
“Uh, no. I’ve been on holiday.”
“We’re all headed for Norwood. Pondicherry Lodge. An entire estate of very nice family homes. Ready-built. Move right in. No digging necessary. Why I doubt there’ll be a mole in England anywhere else very soon!”

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

Dog

by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

Note from Rachel: This silly, charming poem is for everyone's favorite hound, Toby. Though the details of time and setting do not quite fit, the spirit seems right!

Thank you so much to Rachel. And here is my suggested form to revisit this week: the haiku. (The link takes you back to a previous poetry page.)

But you do not have to use that form. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

Title: Patronage
Author: [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles
Rating: G
Author's Notes: He bore no grudge against Bartholomew Sholto...

I have cause to be grateful to St. Bartholomew.

I met Holmes at Bart's; I met Mary because of Thaddeus Sholto and his unfortunate brother.

An odd patron saint for an army doctor perhaps. Though ‘neurological diseases’ come under his protection...

And as Mary teases:

“Choosing to put up with Mr. Holmes and me? Why, you need your head examining.”

Title: An Angel (the serialisation of the Private Journal of Dr Watson)
Author: thesmallhobbit
Rating: G

Miss Morstan is indeed an angel.  She was so caring, so concerned for Sholto’s housekeeper, containing her own distress without a single murmur.  And I longed so much to comfort her when that distress was released, but knew I could not take advantage of one so pure in such plight.  I must remain silent and not betray my inmost desires.
