Title: The Sign of Four, Ch. 5-8: Creosote
Author: gardnerhill
Word Count: 60
Rating: G
Warning: None.
Summary: A master detective is on the scent.

***

The humans wanted me to find the smell. So I hunted down the smell. A sharp, good smell, delightful when combined with all the other dock smells (salt, dead fish, unwashed humans, vomit, beer, canvas, seasoned wood).

My bosses were very pleased with my work – both made that human barking happy-noise when I proudly led them up to the barrel.

The dog in the Cushing version was a bit, um, all over the place, and I swear that there was one point where the momentarily-attended actor-dog had helped himself to the tea table, just outside the camera's sightline. We were all merrily rooting him on, and then were very pleased that the canonical Toby got the breakfast scraps. :-D

(That particular production was notorious for tech problems, not having rehearsal time, etc: I assume the dog that never quite seemed to know where it was supposed to be or what it was supposed to be doing was a symptom of all the rest.)

Oh, that last line makes me smile so much ^__^ Poor Toby - Holmes has 'Norbury' and he will forever have 'creosote' ^__^

Loved the 'delightful' description of all the dock smells too ^_^
