VALL (Part 2) – When First We Practice
"Dear me, Mr. Holmes. Dear me!"
“Jack has been lost overboard in gale off St. Helena. No one knows how accident occurred.”
Douglas himself gave me the idea. It took money and skill – plus the cooperation of three sailors, and the courage of both the Douglases themselves – to pull it off.
I nearly grinned when Watson read me Moriarty’s unsigned, mocking note. No mean victory, to fool the master. I only hoped Douglas’ second faked death proved more inscrutable than the first.
