HOUN, Part 1 – Rainy-Day Reflections

“He is not a man with intimate friends.”

I saw Watson’s expression change when I uttered those words, but I set it aside for the time.

It was only later that I recalled my words. My Watson did have one intimate friend – one who had sent him off into a mucky day, and now to certain peril.

Intimate, idiotic, yet repentant friend. I was on the next train.

Extended-play version (100 words):

“He is not a man with intimate friends.”

I saw Watson’s expression change slightly when I uttered those words, but caught up in explaining my train of thought, and distracted by the larger problem of Sir Charles’ demise, I set it aside for the time.

It was only later, after I had sent my Watson off with Sir Henry, that I recalled my words. My Watson did have one intimate friend – one who had sent him off into a mucky day, and now to certain peril.

Intimate, if occasionally idiotic friend – and one capable of reconsidering his plans and mending his errors. I was on the next train.

Neatly done.

Of course, Holmes would never admit to such a reason:-)

This is very deserving of the extended play. You have produced a very Holmesian study in friendship here.

Oooh, I'm intrigued by the thought that guilt was the reason he follows after Watson. I'd always thought of it as some master plan, but this gives it such a different character. Neat!
