The dining hall was vast and cavernous; the twin candelabra did little to dispel the gloom. High on the panelled walls, portraits stared unblinkingly down upon us, looming out of the shadows as the light flickered in the draughty room. Catching my companion's uneasy look, I answered his unspoken question. "That one is Sir Hugo, hanging directly above my head."
