I glanced at Lestrade as the train pulled out of the station. “That we are at odds? Undoubtedly. And knowing Watson, that’s extra incentive to remain with us.”

“I suppose. I dislike deceiving him, but from what we’ve just discovered about this criminal mastermind M, I’m glad the doctor isn’t in London just now.”

I like this interpretation of Holmes and Lestrade's relationship at this point.

Thank you! Lestrade's characterization in this story - and his disappearance from the tale three-quarters of the way through - has always begged for further explanation, at least to me. :-)
