Canon Story: The Stockbroker’s Clerk
Title: Reading the account

It was with a certain amount of horror that he discovered Watson had published the case of Hall Pycroft. Surely there could be nothing but condemnation in Watson’s retelling. He would certainly be painted as a fool for rushing off to Birmingham and the death of the watchman placed on his shoulders. He could not bear to read Watson’s disappointment.

Where to place the guilt for this case is rather complex. You raise a disturbing point here that Holmes has his own culpability for the watchman's death. If he had made the connection faster, he could have perhaps prevented the theft and murder. Was his desire to pick up Watson part of the problem? Oooh, fascinating thought.
