NAVA – Smoothing the Way
‘Your name is very familiar to me, Mr. Holmes,’ said he, smiling.
In my experience, the higher up in government, the more time wasted trying to gain access. I was mildly surprised when my card gained us immediate entry to Lord Holdhurst. Had Watson’s friend wired ahead, letting him know of our interest in his case?
All became clear with Lord Holdhurst’s warm welcome. He must know Mycroft.
His candor proved it.
Extended-play version (100 words):
‘Your name is very familiar to me, Mr. Holmes,’ said he, smiling.
I anticipated some trouble in gaining an audience with Lord Holdhurst. In my experience, the higher up in government an official is, the more time wasted trying to gain access. So I was surprised when my card gained us immediate entry. I theorized that Watson’s friend had wired his uncle, letting him know of our inquiry.
A plausible theory, but an erroneous one. All became clear when Lord Holdhurst smiled at me, and mentioned his familiarity with my name. Watson did not understand the reference, but I certainly did.
Ah. He knows Mycroft.
That explained his welcome, and his candor.
