The far more serious theft in this house was that my breakfast, customarily left outside the door for me, had been stolen.  Like Mr Holmes, I observed and came to my conclusion.  The paw prints left by the fox were much closer to the house than usual; the cold weather was having an effect.  Unfortunately I never recovered my goods.

Quite. I think the cat was resigned to the loss of his breakfast and even if he did find the fox he was extremely unlikely to get it back ;)

Poor cat, blatantly robbed with no recourse!

...but at least the cat did not wind up *as* the fox's dinner. Small comfort, but comfort all the same.

The cat was aware that this could have been a possibility, which is why unlike Holmes he did not confront the perpetrator.
