Reflecting back on the affair of the Crown's Tiara, I considered how unlikely the whole adventure seemed. Thanks to Holmes's continued efforts, the theft had stayed out of the papers, the unhappy lady had been returned to her family, and Holder had retained his position.

If only I could alter the details sufficiently, perhaps someday the case could be published.

I imagine that was a constant challenge -- to sufficiently anonymize these stories to protect the people and lives involved and to keep clients willing to come to Holmes with their problems as they know him to be discreet despite having his biographer with him all the time.

It's easy to wonder how much Watson changed from the truth. At least it likely explains all the contradictions in the timeline. :)
