His hands didn’t shake as he drew out the cigarette but they might as well have. In times past I might have taken those hands into my own, kissed them, soothed him. But time had passed and there was no free easiness between us now. So all I could do was light his cigarette for him and then back away.

I should never have gone to Watson’s surgery. If I cared for him even the slightest I should have left him well alone, disappeared into Europe and left him in peace. But I confess that human sentimentality I had always considered a weakness in others took hold of me and I had to see him, if only to say goodbye.
