GOLD – Smoked Out
Holmes was curiously distrait, and we walked up and down the garden path for some time in silence.

I felt Watson’s hands supporting me as I was noisily sick behind a convenient clump of plants.

“I assume you had a good reason for smoking so many cigarettes in so short a time, besides making yourself ill.” The words were tart, but his touch was tender, caring.

I nodded, beyond words.

Watson sighed. “The things we do for justice.”

Too funny!

Too many cigs will do that to you, but I'm surprised that they were worse than that first pipe composed of "all the plugs and dottles of the day before". Yuk!

Holmes is a heavy smoker, yeah, and I'm right with you in thinking his first pipe of the day (as described by ACD) must be disgusting beyond belief, but four cigarettes in as many minutes? More than a dozen smoked in under 10? Talk about queasy! :-p

They certainly have both done, and put up with, an awful lot in the name of justice.

I love this. I'd had a fleeting idea similar, but yours is just so fab and fun. Poor Holmes! Wonder if this inspired him to take a few days (hours?) off his own regular smoking?

It's difficult to smoke while tossing your cookies, so if nothing else, there are at least a few minutes where Holmes is not puffing away. ;-) I don't think he'd make it more than a couple of hours without smoking, though.

Does Holmes smoke cigarettes? Not a tobacco pipe?:)

He smokes both in canon. In this particular story (The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez), he deliberately smokes a LOT of cigarettes in a very short time as part of arriving at the solution to the case. (His feeling unwell, however, is purely my inference.)
