It was clear that Bannister was complicit in the matter. His key, left in the door, precisely at the right time? That was unlikely a coincidence as Gilchrist happening to recognize the proofs through the distorted old glass of Soames’ office.
Yet when caught, each strove to protect the college as well as each other. Loyalty is a strange thing.
