Welcome back, everyone! Let's have some canon Sherlock Holmes discussion, shall we? What did you all think of The Bruce-Partington Plans? As always, I've written up a few of my own random thoughts and questions, which are behind the jump. Add your own in the comments!
Discussion about the Granada adaptation of The Bruce-Partington Plans is available in this week's Granada discussion post.
- What piqued Holmes' new interest in the music of the Middle Ages? Is there a story behind it?
- "Once, and only once, he has been here." - What was the once? When was the only other time Mycroft has ever visited his brother at Baker Street?
- Like Sherlock, Mycroft has invented a position of prominence and importance for himself, a job no one has ever held before. In Mycroft's case, it's acting as a one-man English government, the hub of all the Empire's information. What might a third sibling have invented for his/herself?
- There are multiple great stretches of Holmes thinking aloud through his thoughts with Watson as he puts the pieces together in his mind. That's always such a delight.
- I am trying hard not to imagine the claustrophobic terror of a Victorian-era submarine.
- What would have happened if Holmes and Watson were caught breaking and entering? Would Mycroft and the "whole force of the State" come to their aid?
- You know, how come Watson never gets any of these rewards from the Queen? I don't expect her to give him an emerald tie-pin, but how about just a little commendation for the reliable and integral partner of the England's and the world's greatest detective?
- The Bruce-Partington Plans. Mycroft describes them as "the most jealously guarded of all Government secrets" but at the same time thinks "everyone had heard of it." Hmm.
- Finally, a mod apology. I have been dreadfully behind with commenting and my own 60s, and I've been scatterbrained with mod duties in general. I'm really sorry for that. I've been so blocked and frustrated in fic writing for a while now, and I'm making a major move to a new city, which has severely eaten my brain bandwidth. I promise I will try harder to be more reliable for you all. Sorry, again. I love our comm, and I want you to be as happy here as I am.
Comment away, and join us next Sunday for The Veiled Lodger!
