It would be wrong to blame the lion.  Ronder was a bully, but he and the lion had a relationship of sorts.  And so when Ronder was struck down the lion went for the one responsible.  He would have gone for Leonardo too, but he was a coward and had started to run as soon as the cage was unlatched.

The elephant seems to be very even-handed, as befits such an animal. No 4 legged creature behaved worse than the 2 legged ones around them.

The lion wasn't tempted by the scent of blood, he was defending/avenging his master! Oh, that is a spectacular theory. I wonder if he found a new master to protect. Poor lion.
