Canon Story: The Priory School

Author's Note: It drove me nuts that everyone seemed so cavalier about a child's kidnapping. I preferred to imagine Watson shared my frustration, especially as the investigation dragged on.

"So?" Wide awake, Watson was eager for news. Perhaps less eager than agitated. I tried to soothe him.

"All goes well, my friend."

"This isn't right. We're not doing enough."

"Before tomorrow evening we'll have reached the solution of the mystery. I promise."

"Is he alive? Tell me that, if nothing else."

"The boy is safe, Watson. It ends tomorrow."

Watson's agitation here certainly adds more to the suspense and drama of the tale.

I wonder in the original story if Conan Doyle was subconsciously trying to suggest to the readers that the boy was going to be all right: "Holmes isn't too worried, so you shouldn't be..." Might just be another case of the mystery coming before the characters though ^^

I like this version of Watson. Of course a child in danger would frustrate him.
