He held out his uninjured hand, as pale and clammy as his face, and it bobbed in the air in time with his bounding heart. Somehow he was still standing.

Only a truly singular experience inspires such resolve. Watson had brought me a gift.

From this, I get the irresistable image of Watson as a cat, bringing Holmes a mouse as a token of his affection. "Look, see, it's even still bleeding and wriggling a bit!" ;-)

I don't think Holmes is necessarily completely without sympathy here, but his top priority is always his own interest. He probably thinks he'll be helping Hatherley while he gets his own enjoyment at the same time.
