It was an experiment, and one long overdue. I sent Watson on his way to discover, if he could, what had become of Lady Frances; and simultaneously to learn if I could be at ease without him.

Three days later, after nightly reminders of the Baskerville matter, I wound up the Abrahams case and was on my way to Baden.

Thank you! I have no idea why Holmes' fortuitous turn-up in LADY reminded me of his similar "I'm staying in London to work on a different case (but secretly following you while you work on the case)" behavior in HOUN in this read-through when it had never occurred to me before, but once it did...

Oh, nice link to make there. I also love the nightly reminders idea. I can only imagine what Sherlock Holmes sees in his dreams.

Such great work packing so much in allusion and connection into 60 words.

Possibly Holmes' natural reserve and detachment spares him from the worst of what he might otherwise dream about. He has to have a certain distance, after all, or he couldn't do the work he does. But yes, I expect he has some rough nights - and he does not take possible danger to Watson calmly.
