FINA -- The Final Problem

He was rarely surprised, he reflected, waiting, the reins both familiar and strange in his hands.

Yesterday, he had been surprised three times.

The first: Sherlock coming to him for sanctuary.

The second: Sherlock’s unhidden fear, and plain intention to protect those he cared for: his brother and his doctor.

The third: his own voice, volunteering to drive the brougham.

Mycroft is the unsung hero here. Clearly Sherlock's behaviour has caused even his brother to act out of character. I was very surprised when I read the identity of the coachman.

It is one of the great unsolved mysteries of FINA, isn't it? Why was Mycroft the driver? When did he learn of his brother's danger? And where did he learn the skill to rapidly drive a brougham through the worst of London traffic? Ah, the mystery of Mycroft...

The implications of #2 are the most interesting to me. Holmes has always hidden his fears to Mycroft, but not on that day. That openness from his brother must have been alarming and disturbing, making #3 possible. Even the immovable object cannot withstand that particular irresistible force.

Mycroft is fabulous, I agree. And he's really a key element in FINA, one that is never truly explored (by ACD, anyway).

Wow, this is great - and I agree, so seemingly out of character for Mycroft, and so wonderful to see him try to help like that.

One of the things I love most about Mycroft's character in canon is that he *always* comes through for his brother. It's rarely as dramatically as this, but in the recorded instances where he does make an effort - or break his stated routine - it's always related to Sherlock in some way.
