My groom says I look the best and compares me to Black Beauty.  The master cannot praise his gundog enough and believes he is the best black Labrador in the county.  The cook has nothing but good words for her lucky black cat.  Yet the great Mr Holmes has nothing but harsh words for a man who shares our colour.

A rather elegant and poetic way of describing the situation.

I just can't work Holmes' behaviour in this story into how I see him as a whole. It doesn't fit - he's like a different man.

I love this. A horse is not going to understand racism. And Holmes certainly deserves to be called out for it, even if that reproach ends up being equine. :)

Thank you. It seems strange that Holmes, who generally disregarded society's conventions, chose to adhere to this one.
