Even Mr Holmes cannot have anticipated just how much the east wind would blow and how many would wither before its blast.  Despite the lives that Mr Holmes’ work no doubt saved, there has not been a family in this village that has not been affected.  And even he knew sorrow when a regimental doctor failed to return from France.
