Author's Notes: As to Miss Violet Hunter, my friend Holmes, rather to my disappointment, manifested no further interest in her when once she had ceased to be the centre of one of his problems, and she is now the head of a private school at Walsall, where I believe that she has met with considerable success.

The three of us had the compartment to ourselves for the journey back to London and I discreetly feigned sleep to allow my companions to converse.

“I think the good doctor is expecting a happy announcement from us,” smiled Holmes.

Miss Hunter unfortunately seemed to share his amusement.

“I fear, Mr Holmes, that I am already married to my work.”

Indeed. But can we assume that she and Holmes stayed in touch, because how else would Watson know that she became a headmistress?

THanks. I'm sure this did happen.

Years ago I read someone writing Holmes would make one hell of a husband, but I don't know. At least the woman would know the worst from the start, and not expect romantic. ("Ah, yes. This is the anniversary of the Brixton Slayer's second murder.") With Victorian early marriages, I'm inclined to think Miss Hunter had her suitors, and decided against them, before she met Holmes.

If Holmes was why she had the money to start a school, he probably thought it no more than a fair break. And it might have been a very good investment.
