I was fortunate that the remaining patients of Mr Farquhar were prepared to stay with me or I would have struggled with my new practice.  But the greatest difference came when new patients called in, for my dear Mary would speak to them in such a reassuring fashion that they had started to feel better before they even saw me.

A good practice stands and falls with the doctor's receptionist, imho. :) Lovely insight that Watson is having here.

That's an excellent and canonesque sidelight on his flourishing practice. (I wonder, too, if there were some not-very-sick people who wanted to hear more Holmes cases.)

Thank you. There may have been a few interested in the cases, but I suspect that Holmes wasn't well known when Watson was building up his practice.

That's lovely ^^ (Makes me think of Watson's description of his wife at the beginning of The Man with the Twisted Lip.) It's nice to see Mary getting a bit more of a mention. It's a shame she's completely offstage in ACD's story. (Watson running upstairs to tell her where he's going rather suggests a little boy letting his mother know he's going off with a friend ^^)

Thank you. I had been thinking of that story and it made sense that Mary would be a significant part of the practice, as I'm sure many doctors' wives were.
