Canon Story: The Musgrave Ritual

Author's Notes: I researched what type of tobacco Holmes would smoke but found nothing. (We know that Watson liked to smoke a blend called 'Arcadia'.) 'Lewis' in the drabble refers to Robert Lewis, a tobacco retailer who during the late 19th century owned one of the biggest cigar shops in London.


The evening came when Holmes searched the flat for Lewis' latest shipment, a special Balkan blend.

I wordlessly handed him the instructions I had prepared.

After much stepping around the flat, counting and measuring, the sweet smell of tobacco finally wafted upwards from the settee.

"'Beside the pipe-rack'," Holmes muttered, in a tone of disgruntled affection, "would have quite sufficed."

Ah, you are teaching me new idioms (not a native English speaker her). hoist with his own petard is rather brilliant. :)

I imagine Watson choosing the most obvious place for the tobacco, just to make Holmes' search even more ridiculous. Thank you!

I love that last suggestion. Watson would have done it, too. We know he read Poe.

I'd never have realised English wasn't your native language, if you hadn't told me. Shakespeare would be gratified you appreciated his metaphor, which was brilliant when he wrote it.

Oh, it's a Shakespeare metaphor. Fascinating stuff.

I studied and taught (American Studies, of all things) in the US for a couple of years, and all my fandoms are British - which means I am constantly immersed in the English language. But I am German. :)
