Annie took in the detective's features, his thin lips and brown eyes, looking anything but kind. He reminded her of her father, smelling of pit-coal and snow. Yet she trusted him, implicitly. For what her mind suspected, her heart refused to believe. Holmes was untouched by this tangle of emotions. He'd see the truth she couldn't bring herself to see.

Oh, yes, I like that. An insight into Mr Harrison, Sr's personality (perhaps giving us a clue as to why his children ended up the way they did).

And an insight into Holmes' personality - reminding us how important it is that he keeps emotion out of his work. He may allow emotions in later (not turning the culprit in to the police, for example) but he has to remain detached in order to discover the truth.

And finally an insight into Annie's personality. She obviously loves Percy fiercely and would always put him first, but a brother is still a brother. I like your interpretation - she's an intelligent woman and suspects what must have happened, but can't quite believe it. I wonder if she was the one who suggested bringing Holmes in (Percy may have mentioned going to school with Watson, friend of the famous Sherlock Holmes) - she needed someone from the outside to save Percy because she couldn't bring herself to do it.
