I hesitated too much; a more efficient, energetic course was needed. Police in America are as prone to imbecility as their British peers - and may even harbour troubling sympathies, sometimes. Their justice may be no more satisfactory than that of a random shipwreck or of naive and ignorant men.

I shall keep the lesson in mind for next time.

Author’s note: I really could not seem to get this piece to go in the direction it was supposed to, and had a bit of a spaz attack at it from frustration, but oh well.

Quite interesting! And Holmes's insight about "troubling sympathies" would have been all too possible.

Excellent point regarding the "troubling sympathies." Nicely done.

This was a rough week for several people, so don't feel alone on that. But I like yours! Thinking coolly and logically through a bad result and learning from it. Very Holmes.
