He definitely is a mummy's boy, isn't he? ^^ I wonder if Oldacre had observed the closeness between his former sweetheart and her son, and that only encouraged him to pin his own "murder" on the young man.

It is intriguing how in the story McFarlane's agonised cry of "It will break my mother's heart -- it will break her heart" is an early indication of where to look for clues in the case, as to break Mrs McFarlane's heart was Oldacre's motive.

Spot on, incisive, and witty- I particularly love that you honed in on McFarlane's relationship with his mother (Oldacre certainly knew John was the best way to hurt his former sweetheart) and pointed out that he really wasn't very bright about the whole thing. Greeks bearing gifts and all that :D This was delightful- thank you!!

To be fair - if an old acquaintance of your parents suddenly made you their heir, you might be suspicious, but thinking you're going to be framed for murder isn't the first thing to come to mind ^_^ It was a very sneaky plot.
