"Mother's darlin'"... Perfect!
Even in canon he comes across as a mamma's boy.
(Still, he doesn't deserve to be tried for a crime he didn't commit!)

Perfect rhyming! :)

It is intriguing how in the story McFarlane's agonised cry of "It will break my mother's heart -- it will break her heart" is an early indication of where to look for clues in the case, as to break Mrs McFarlane's heart was Oldacre's motive.

Spot on, incisive, and witty- I particularly love that you honed in on McFarlane's relationship with his mother (Oldacre certainly knew John was the best way to hurt his former sweetheart) and pointed out that he really wasn't very bright about the whole thing. Greeks bearing gifts and all that :D This was delightful- thank you!!
