That is very true. And yet, most of what we know of Sherlock Holmes is through his eyes only.

I find it rather touching that Holmes is contemplating that he's being selfish. And it's also somehow touching that they both avoid the word "love". Watson knows what earlier conversation Holmes is referring to, and Watson's statement skirts around the word. It's always more moving in fiction when people talk around their feelings, instead of coming right out with them.

I loved how you picked up on the short exchange about love and selfishness in your discussion thoughts on SOLI, too.

Personally, when I envision Holmes and Watson as a Victorian gay couple, I cannot see them every talking about their relationship with declarations of love. Whatever they shared, sexually, to me is always an extension of their friendship.

It's always more moving in fiction when people talk around their feelings, instead of coming right out with them. I whole-heartedly agree.
