Date: 2014-04-06 05:00 pm (UTC)It only occurred to me today - Gilchrist is going out to Rhodesia to avoid scandal, but he says that he's been offered a commission. Surely he wouldn't have been offered one out of the blue - I assume he's applied for one. So, was he already thinking of giving up his studies? Or was he perhaps thinking of joining after he got his degree? (It could be an untruth I suppose, just an excuse to say why he's not taking the exam. But Holmes does seem to think he's really going out to Rhodesia.)
