Wonderful rhyming - cease/police especially. :)

Perhaps someone who had once given in to temptation to crime and regretted it will make an even better policeman than someone who never even felt the temptation. ;)

Thanks ^^ And I think you may be right - you don't want a policeman to be "holier-than-thou", you want someone who can understand what leads people into criminal acts. And the fact that Gilchrist has given into temptation once and knows the penalty, will make him stronger when he confronts temptation again.

Gilchrist sounds like he would be the ideal candidate for the colonial police - and not the first young man to be sent to the colonies to avoid scandal.

Gilchrist will do well in the colonial police I suppose. He is on the whole an honorable man - he immediately repented of his sin and tried to do the right thing.

It only occurred to me today - Gilchrist is going out to Rhodesia to avoid scandal, but he says that he's been offered a commission. Surely he wouldn't have been offered one out of the blue - I assume he's applied for one. So, was he already thinking of giving up his studies? Or was he perhaps thinking of joining after he got his degree? (It could be an untruth I suppose, just an excuse to say why he's not taking the exam. But Holmes does seem to think he's really going out to Rhodesia.)

Maybe he was aware that his studies weren't going as well as they should have been, despite the tutor's belief. His behaviour wasn't that of a person who knew they were doing well.
